The then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli laid the foundation stone of the tunnel at Tutipakha towards Kathmandu on November 4, 2007. Its foundation stone was laid saying that it would be able to work within 42 months . The project has said that it is difficult to complete the work on time due to covid and occasional local disruptions.

After the tunnel is operational, Sisnekhola in Dhading will be reached within three minutes from Thankot in Kathmandu. According to the project, the distance of 2.688 km will be reached within 3 minutes by going through the Sisnekhola tunnel, which will be reached at a distance of eight and a half kilometers from Balambu towards Kathmandu.

The distance of the main tunnel is 2.688 km and the distance of the emergency tunnel is 2.557 km. The emergency tunnel has been 'break through' on July 22. Finishing is going on now. The main tunnel was ready to break through on February 23. When 14 meters were left to be dug, the locals put forward new/old demands including drinking water, irrigation and stopped the work towards Dhading and Kathmandu for a month. which could not proceed with the digging of the tunnel.

Deputy Project Director of Nagadhunga-Sisne Khola Tunnel Construction Project Govind Dumru said that the work is progressing fast as the tunnel is being worked on around the clock by making 8/8 hour shifts.

The tunnel was constructed by adopting the 'drill and blast method'. Seven gates leading from the main tunnel to the emergency tunnel have been constructed. Deputy project director of the project, Dumru, said that an emergency tunnel has been constructed to exit the main tunnel quickly in case of any future incident inside the tunnel.

After 'break through', lighting, oxygen connection, road slope work will be done inside the tunnel. On the other hand, the construction of the Loughover towards Balambu is going on in full swing. Three bridges and six culverts have been constructed. The 2.307 km two-lane road from Balambu to Tutipakha, where the tunnel enters, is black.

A 565-meter access road will be constructed towards Sisne river in Dhading. Now, about 10,000 vehicles pass through Nagadhunga every day, big and small. But vehicles carrying petroleum products, motorcycles and overloaded vehicles are not allowed to use the tunnel. The tunnel will be monitored by CCTV cameras. The construction of the tunnel is being done by the Japanese company Hazma Endo Corporation.

In this project, which is contracted for 22 billion rupees, Japan has 16 and a half billion rupees as loan support. The Government of Nepal has invested 6 billion rupees in it. According to the initial agreement, the project period has ended in 080 Baisakh. Since the work is not completed within that time, the deadline has been extended to 081 Baisakh 13. As the work cannot be completed within this time, the road department sources said that they are preparing to extend the time by one more year.
