I remember a few years ago I went to the Federal Parliament with my students for an educational visit. The students were impressed by the strict code of honor, diplomatic discipline enforced inside the Parliament building. Parliament is considered a symbol of democracy. Members of Parliament are respected representatives of citizens. We naturally expect good conduct from our democratically elected representatives.
Courtesy and respect are paramount in parliamentary work. But recently, I am disappointed after seeing the indecent behavior of some members of the Nepali Congress. The video clearly shows how they verbally assaulted the Prime Minister and the former Prime Minister. Vandalism is reminiscent of an angry mob.
We know that the opposition has the right to peaceful protest. But hijacking the entire proceedings of Parliament to show your displeasure is an attack on democracy. They should immediately apologize for insulting senior leaders inside Parliament House.
Otherwise, this kind of angry behavior of politicians gives a wrong signal to the people. Nepalese people are already frustrated and impatient due to economic crisis. Whatever happens in the parliament, the people will follow it on the streets. MPs who are paid by citizens' tax money have a moral obligation to be ethical.
