The Supreme Court declared illegal the appointment of UML's Khagraj Adhikari as the Chief Minister of Gandaki Province on Monday and issued a mandate to appoint Surendraraj Pandey of the Congress as the Chief Minister before that.

Order to appoint Pandey to Gandaki

The bench of Supreme Court Justices Kumar Regmi and Sunil Kumar Pokharel has given a mandate to appoint Pandey, the leader of the Congress Provincial Assembly Parliamentary Party, as the Chief Minister of Gandaki within 48 hours. Also, the official has canceled the vote of confidence taken for the Chief Minister on May 23 as illegal.

'In the 60-member Gandaki Provincial Assembly, a minimum of 31 members is required for a majority. The order has been cancelled,' said the order of the Supreme Court. According to the order of the Supreme Court, the Chief Minister Dilliraj Bhatt will have to administer oath to Pandey as Chief Minister by Wednesday evening.

On March 25, Adhikari was appointed as the Chief Minister after the letter of support of 31 MPs was submitted to the provincial chief Bhatt. The Congress reached the Supreme Court on March 27 calling June unconstitutional. After the Supreme Court cleared the way for the officer to take the vote of confidence on May 17, he took the vote of confidence on May 23. After 30 MPs signed in his favour, Speaker Krishna Prasad Dhital appointed Adhikari as Chief Minister. Congress approached the Supreme Court again on May 26 against the Speaker's move.
