Police abuse of journalists is condemnable: Federation

On Wednesday, February 9th, there was a program to put pressure on those who were cheated during foreign employment at the Department of Foreign Employment in Tahachal, Kathmandu. Security personnel from the Kalimati Police circle abused the journalists who went to the Foreign Employment Department to collect news on the same subject even when they showed the press pass issued by the Information Department.

Using the language of threats saying that the press representative certificate of information department can be bought with money, the police took away the journalist's press pass, arrested him, put him in a van and took him to Kalimati police circle, kept him in a room and made him turn off his camera and mobile phone.

General Secretary Puri has said, 'This excess by the police against journalists who are engaged in independent communication is highly condemnable and it is an interference on the freedom of the press. The federation is of the opinion that this action by the police is a serious blow to the practice of free journalism provided by the constitution. The federation has demanded that the relevant agencies take strict measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents of anti-press by the police, and to investigate the

incident and take immediate legal action against the culprits.
