The government has stated that legal arrangements will be made for the commercial production of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Finance Minister Barshman Pun, while presenting the budget for the financial year 081/082 on Tuesday, said that the commercial production of cannabis will be made after legal arrangements for medicinal purposes.
The government also formed a working group under the coordination of the then joint secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs in November 2080 to study the feasibility of cannabis cultivation. Last year also, Finance Minister Prakasharan Mahat, while presenting the budget for the financial year 2080-81, announced that he would study the possibilities of cannabis cultivation. . It is said in item number 105 of the budget statement for the financial year 2080-81, 'The feasibility of cannabis cultivation for medicinal use will be studied.'
There has been a demand for the legalization of marijuana cultivation in Nepal for a long time. Even the United Nations has removed marijuana from the list of harmful drugs. The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (UNCND) removed marijuana from the list of harmful drugs after a series of recommendations by the World Health Organization (WHO).
