On this day (April 3) in 1948, US President Harry S. Truman signed the 'Marshall Plan', a comprehensive plan for the reconstruction of Europe destroyed in World War II.
The plan was introduced to prevent the rise of communism in European countries that had fought the World War on the side of America and to revive the declining economy. The then US Secretary of State George C. Marshall prepared the plan. According to the same plan, the US Parliament approved an economic package of 12 billion US dollars for Western Europe.
