On this day (February 28) in 1991, Iraq was defeated in the first Gulf War. On August 2, 1990, the Iraqi army attacked Kuwait with the orders of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. In two days, Iraq took control of Kuwait.

With the Iraqi attack, Saudi Arabia and Egypt asked the US and Western countries to intervene. The US-led invasion of Iraq was carried out in two phases. The first phase of Operation Desert Shield lasted from August 1990 to January 1991.

In mid-January 1991, the UN Security Council demanded that Iraq withdraw its troops from Kuwait. But after President Hussain disobeyed it, the US launched the second phase of Operation Desert Storm on January 17, 1991.

because of which most of the Iraqi soldiers who attacked Kuwait surrendered. Some soldiers were killed and some escaped and returned to Iraq. At least 100,000 civilians lost their lives due to the war that lasted for about 6 months.
