When the youth of the Tharu community of Western Terai finished working in the fields, they used to go to the hilly areas of bordering India in search of work. The main destination of their employment was the hilly areas of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. After planting paddy, most of the young people used to go to pick apples in the mountain orchards of Himachal in June-July. Some used to reach nearby Kumaon and Gadwal in Uttarakhand.

Changing destinations, changing jobs

Those who entered India during the rainy season used to return home to celebrate Dasaitihar and Maghi, while those who brought paddy in search of work are currently returning home to celebrate New Year and Chaita Dashain.

In recent years, the choice of Tharu youth to enter India in search of work is not limited to Himachal and Uttarakhand, their destination has expanded to the southern states of India . The tradition of returning home during festivals and farming is also disappearing. Until a few years ago, the village leaders used to reach wherever they were looking for work, now they have started reaching from Delhi to Goa, a tourist city of India .

When they started reaching the big cities of India, their jobs also started to change . 'I came from Noida near Delhi, I could not come home on Dasaitihar, this time I returned to celebrate the New Year,' said Vikas Chaudhary of Thakurbaba Municipality-8 Ranipur in Bardia, 'I will return to Noida after a month.' He was answering the phone to his friends at home and in Noida. "After taking a bus from Delhi Anand Bihar at 9 o'clock in the night, I will reach Ranipur near Bhuregau in Bardia through Banwasa in the morning," he said.

He has been working at The Sky Night Club in Noida, near New Delhi, the capital of India, for two and a half years. Where 12 people from his village Ranipur and neighboring villages are working. Three years ago, he entered India for the first time in search of work, but after working in small hotels in Delhi and Noida for a few days, he got the opportunity to work at Sky Night Club through the contact of his friends. "Salary is good, along with food and living facilities, tips and bonuses are also available," said Vikas, "out of 70 workers in the club, 12 are Nepalis and most of the others are young people from Nagaland, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh in India." He said that the movement will continue till 2/3 o'clock in the night. According to him, instead of the complicated work like apple picking, packing and cutting the garden grass in Shimla, the youth's choice of employment has started to be in hotels, clubs, and industrial businesses in big cities .

According to Rambabu Rana of Laljhadi Rural Municipality-4 Dekhtabhuli, where the Ranatharu community is densely populated in Kanchanpur, the Tharu youths have been coming to India for a few years and want to change their traditional jobs. They used to reach the border areas of India for earning, but today they have started reaching from Bengaluru, Chennai to the cities of Kerala in South India . "Today's Tharu youth are educated, their choice is working in big hotels, clubs, casinos," he said, "Earnings are better than before, they have also got the opportunity to learn new jobs."

New Year and Chaite Dasai When Navratri is about to start, Nepali people who have gone to different cities of India in search of work are returning home. Nepalis are returning home in the number of 500 to 1000 people every day through Gadachowki in Kanchanpur and Trinagar Gorifanta in Kailali. According to the security personnel stationed at the border, the return of Nepali workers, which started from the first week of March, has increased rapidly since the second week. Most of those returning home through Gauriphanta and Gaddachouki border are from Far West and Karnali Provinces .
