Padam Giri, chief whip of the main opposition party CPN-UML, has said that shutting down social media will not help in institutionalizing democracy. He accused the government of restricting citizens' freedom of expression by deciding to close Tik Tok in Lahad a few months ago.
In the interaction program on information and democracy in Kathmandu on Saturday, Chief Whip Giri insisted that closing down social media just because someone does not like it cannot be institutionalized for democracy.
He claimed that it cannot be considered justified to take a direct decision to close despite the fact that there is a way of regulation and monitoring. He said that the problem will not be solved by saying something is wrong to those in power.
'Whether it is a journalist or a leader, whether it is an employee or a person from any field . Every citizen should be accountable for what he says and writes,' he said, 'It is not correct to think that not being accountable means democracy. We must be fully accountable for our work and duties.'
He said that the democratic government should find a solution through regulation and monitoring of matters preferred by the people, but should not impose restrictions.
