National ID is mandatory to get SIM card

From next January 1st, it is mandatory to submit national identity card to get a mobile phone SIM card. In the notice published in the gazette on Monday, it is mentioned that national identity card is required for telephone and sim card related services.

National ID is mandatory to get SIM card


According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, in order to get public service facilities provided by government agencies, institutions and the private sector, instead of citizenship certificate, a national identity card or national identity number must be submitted. It is stated in the notice that such a decision has been made regarding the use of the national identity card for the purposes of section 3 and 10 of the National Identity Card and Registration Act, 2076.

At present, telecommunication service providers are providing electronic SIM (e-SIM) that can be installed in mobile along with plastic nano SIM card after submitting various details along with citizenship certificate .

According to Nepal Telecommunication Authority, 3 crore 48 lakh 75 thousand or 98.99 percent have subscribed to mobile voice service . Based on SIM subscription, Nepal Telecom Company Limited (Nepal Telecom) has 22 million users (63.2 percent) and Ncell has 12 million users (36.7 percent).

The Ministry of Home Affairs has said that from January 1, national circulars have been made mandatory for services related to banking and financial services, social security fund and real estate. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the national identity card has been made mandatory to obtain services related to social security, health insurance, pension, rajshwa (personal income tax registration), driver's license, company registration and renewal services applicable in different districts since July 1.
