On this day (May 22) in 2004, Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister of India. Born on September 26, 1932 in West Punjab (now Pakistan), Singh was the Prime Minister till May 26, 2014. His family moved to India when India and Pakistan were partitioned in 1947.

Singh, who graduated in economics from Oxford University in the UK, also worked at the United Nations from 1966 to 1969. Subsequently, Singh, who was an advisor to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, held various key positions in the Government of India in the 1970s and 80s.

In 1991, with the financial crisis in India, Singh was appointed as the Finance Minister by Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. At that time, India's economic crisis was over under his leadership.

After the Congress-led UPA coalition came to power in 2004, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi promoted Singh to the prime ministership. After the UPA alliance won the 2009 general elections, he became the prime minister again.
