Five people died when a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Malta during the rescue operation. The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) also reported that eight people were injured.
About 7.6 meters long and operated by two motors, the boat was carrying 34 passengers from Syria, Eritrea, Ghana and Egypt, crossing the Mediterranean Sea. An AFM aircraft was sent to the scene after the boat reached about 3.5 nautical miles (6.5 km). An AFM vessel was sent to the spot but the boat reportedly capsized during the rescue operation. Investigation of the incident is ongoing.
