On this day in 1955: The polio vaccine

Inactivated Polio Virus Vaccine (IPV) Dr. Jonas E. It was developed by a team led by Salk . It is one of the vaccines currently used against polio. After developing the vaccine, Salk took his wife and three sons with him for testing.

In 1948, polio disease spread worldwide as an epidemic. For about 7 years, about 500,000 people died every year due to polio. Before vaccination, polio was the leading cause of disability in children.

But in 1955, the IPV vaccine was given to large numbers of schoolchildren. Because of this, the polio infection was reduced to about two percent . 6 years later in 1961, Albert B. Sabin developed the second polio vaccine. A third vaccine was introduced in 1963.
