The fish farmers of Sarlahi protested by throwing fish at Phuljor Chowk under the East-West Highway, demanding agricultural meters.
Hundreds of fish farmers from Ishwarpur Municipality and Chandranagar Rural Municipality of the district gathered at Phuljor Chowk under East-West Highway and protested by throwing fish on the road.
They said that they had to start a protest saying that the Electricity Authority is charging high tariffs to the fish farmers by giving them industrial meters instead of agricultural meters. On Friday morning, the fisherfolk farmers blocked the highway for half an hour and shouted slogans saying 'stop industrial tariff, maintain agricultural tariff'.
Ishwarpur Municipality Mayor Manoj Acharya and former Mayor Manoj Devkota, former minister Shambhulal Shrestha also participated in the fisherfolk farmers movement. Santosh Acharya, a farmer from Ishwarpur, said that fish farmers are getting killed due to electric shock.
He expressed his complaint that because the electricity authority has treated the fish farmers as industrialists, the farmers were forced to come to the protest when they faced problems. Due to farmers' movement, the highway was completely blocked and the deployment of security personnel on the highway was increased.
