The Chief Justice of India visited Nepal for the first time

Chandrachud, who came at the invitation of Nepal's Chief Justice Vishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, was welcomed at the airport by Supreme Court Judge Anand Mohan Bhattarai and Sapna Malla Pradhan.

On Saturday afternoon, Chandrachud is scheduled to tour those cities in the valley before giving a keynote speech on Jurisprudence of Juvenile Justice organized by the Central Juvenile Justice Committee of the Supreme Court. Accordingly, he went to Pashupati on Saturday morning. After visiting Pashupati, he is being taken around the ancient sites of Patan, Vasantpur and Bhaktapur. After that, he will give a keynote speech covering Jurisprudence of the world along with India's practice on Juvenile Justice .

"After his speech on the jurisprudence of juvenile justice, the Chief Justice of India will meet with the Chief Justice of Nepal in the afternoon," said an official of the Supreme Court, "then a state banquet has been organized in his honor at Solti Hotel in the afternoon." Only the Minister of Law, Minister of Women and Children, Judges of the Supreme Court and high officials of the Supreme Court will participate.

Chandrachud, who came to Nepal with his wife Kalpana Das, Indian Supreme Court Registrar Rakesh Kumar and Court Chetan Arora, will visit Muktinath before returning to India on Sunday afternoon and will reach Annapurna base camp and return to Pokhara for dinner.

Chandrachud, who has created the image of an intelligent judge among contemporary chief justices around the world, is one of the rare justices in India who has a liberal outlook. He is also known as a learned and studious judge who has a degree in reservation from Howard. His judgment that reservation is needed to represent the economically backward and unrepresented people rather than caste was very popular in India.

Similarly, his decision to cancel the rule of allowing only men to enter the Sabarimala temple in Kerala, saying that the custom of not allowing non-menstruating women to enter the temple is against the constitutional morality, is also very famous . He has a very popular theory that the court should see what is the underlying sentiment behind the constitution rather than the letters written in it, and the objective sought to be achieved by that moral ground should be the basis of the judgment. The courts of South Asian countries have started to mention this in their judgments citing this principle which was propounded by the judgment of Chandrachud.

Judge Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada has also explained this principle in the judgment against the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly in Nepal, while Anand Mohan Bhattarai has explained this principle in the case against the decision of the parties to nominate Bamdev Gautam who lost the election as a member of the National Assembly.

There are also those who criticize Chandrachud, who played an important role in solving the Ram temple issue, as leaning more towards the Bharatiya Janata Party.

He pronounced the decision to cancel the marriage ban imposed by section 370 of the Penal Code of India against sexual minorities . Dhananjay, the son of Yashwant Vishnu Chandrachud, the longest serving Chief Justice, became the Chief Justice on 9 November 2022.
