Narayan Prasad Dahal has been elected as the Speaker of the National Assembly. In the elections held on Tuesday, Dahal, the common candidate of the coalition party, won by defeating Yuvraj Sharma of the Congress. Dahal received 39 votes in the 59-member National Assembly. Similarly, Sharma got 17 votes.
Dahal, who won the post of president, got 17 votes from Maoist, 10 from UML, 8 from United Socialist Party and 3 from Jaspa. Similarly, Vamdev Gautam, nominated by the President, has also voted for Dahal.
Similarly, there are 16 MPs from the Congress and 1 MP from the Democratic Socialist Party in the National Assembly. Apart from itself, Congress has got 1 vote from LOSPA. 56 MPs were present in Wednesday's election. Rashtriya Janamorcha MP Tul Prasad Vishwakarma remained neutral. There is one vacant seat in the National Assembly to be nominated by the President.
Dahal, who has been in office for four years, was nominated as a member of the National Assembly by the President on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers in March 2078. Dahal, whose permanent address is Chitwan, has been active in the party since 2031. He is a member of the Maoist Central since 2057 .
Dahal became a member of the Interim Legislative Parliament in 2063 after the Maoist peace process. In the first Constituent Assembly election held in 2006, Dahal was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly from Chitwan-3. Earlier, when Dahal was the Prime Minister, he was an advisor.
