Narayankaji Shrestha, the senior vice-president of the CPN Maoist Center, is going to repeat as the foreign minister. On Wednesday, the Maoist Center decided to hand over Shrestha as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. He was the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister until the Maoists broke the alliance with the Congress.
He will be in charge of the third ministry in the Dahal-led government. When the Dahal-led government was formed, Shrestha was previously the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport. Shrestha took charge of the house after the chairman of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party, Lamichhane, who was elected from Chitwan-2, was relieved of his post by the Supreme Court's decision in the citizenship case. Shrestha is a member of the National Assembly.
Shrestha, who has been active in Nepali politics since the 2040s, is also the facilitator of the 12-point agreement between the then rebel power CPN-Maoist and the 7 protesting political parties. Shrestha, who was also the general secretary of the then CPN Ekta Kendra, has been receiving important responsibilities time and again even after the unification with the Maoists.
In the 2074 election, Shrestha contested from Gorkha-2. However, Shrestha, the candidate of the Left Alliance, was defeated by Baburam Bhattarai, the coordinator of the then Naya Shakti. Even though the Left Alliance won a landslide victory across the country, Shrestha's entry into parliament was closed after he lost the election in Gorkha-2.
Even before that, Shrestha had to face defeat in the 2070 election. When the Constituent Assembly elections were held again in 070, Shrestha, who became a candidate from Makuwanpur-3, was defeated by the then UML candidate Subash Chandra Thakuri. This defeat also put a 'break' on his desire to enter Parliament.
Shrestha, who has been in underground and semi-underground politics for a long time, got the chance to enter parliament for the first time in 2064. At that time, he entered the Constituent Assembly as a nominated member. During his stay in the Constituent Assembly, he became a minister twice.
