At least 38 people have died due to floods in the African country of Kenya. The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) said the level of the Athi River near the capital Nairobi has risen above the emergency level due to heavy rains.

The rain has also disrupted normal business. One more person has died and six people are missing in the rains that occurred in Mathare township of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya on Wednesday.

Some areas have been disconnected due to flooding. Thousands of traders and workers were stranded after the Athi River washed away the main bridge in Kitengela, south of the capital Nairobi. According to international news agencies, more than 60 families were left homeless after the Thiba River burst its banks in central Kenya's Kirinyaga County on Tuesday, flooding their homes and businesses.

Many counties in Kenya have been affected since the rains started in March this year. According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, there has been extremely heavy rain in Kenya and some areas have received up to 200 millimeters of rain in one day. After the rains, notices have been issued to residents of low-lying and flood-affected areas to move to higher ground, warning that it will cause flooding across the country.

Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kindiki Kithure, has asked residents living near the dam, including Masinga in the Eastern Region and Thiba in the Central Region, to relocate. He said that the government is on high alert and the multi-agency team is working to reduce the impact of floods in the settlements as there is a risk of more rain causing disaster.
