Perhaps for the first time in the history of Britain, Buddha Jayanti was celebrated at 10 Downing Street, the office and residence of the British Prime Minister in London on Thursday, May 22. In previous years, Buddha Jayanti was celebrated inside the British Parliament building, but this time it was celebrated in the Prime Minister's office and residence.
Britain gives equal recognition and importance to all religions. The Buddha Jayanti ceremony held at 10 Downing Street was officiated by Baroness Scott Brooke OBE, British Deputy Minister for Social Housing, Religious Beliefs and Lords. She said that according to the United Nations, Britain is the most diverse country in the world. She also said that Gautama Buddha's message is more relevant in today's world. Ambassadors of Nepal, Sri Lanka and India as well as Buddhist monks from Nepal, Japan, UK, Sri Lanka and India participated in the
ceremony. About 100 people from different countries including Lamaguru Khenpo Santosh Gurung who is visiting UK, Yogesh Gurung, Chairman of Diamond Buddhist Center, Councilor Lakshya Gurung, former Deputy Mayor of Barnet Council, Poonam Gurung, former president of NRNA UK, former Councilor Retired Major Chitra Rana participated in the
program.
Just last Monday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak organized a reception at 10 Downing Street on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Nepal-UK Treaty of Peace and Friendship.
