In Nepal's education sector, Darbar High School, which has a glorious history, had a declining standard of teaching and it became difficult to get students. Children from families with better financial conditions went to private schools, while the poor also preferred public schools. But now the situation is reversed.

A message from the revival of Durbar High School

Students want to leave private schools and come to Durbar High School. The school has to select and enroll as there is more interest than capacity. The reason for such a transformation in a short period of time is not only its attractive grand building, but also the transformation in the teaching style. Durbar High School

Increasing student attraction makes it clear that if physical infrastructure and educational quality are improved, there will be no problem of students in public schools.

Darbar High School, opened 170 years ago, is the oldest school in Nepal. Jung Bahadur Rana opened Durbar High School after returning from his visit to Britain. In the early days this school was accessible only to the children of the Rana family. The servants of the Rana family were able to educate their children in Darbar High School since 1933. From the year 1957, it was also opened for the children of other common people. But while private schools flourished, the standard of education in public schools declined, and Darbar High School became limited to a school for underprivileged children. The government also did not show interest in bringing back the glory of the high school. After the earthquake destroyed the building in 2072, the situation became more uncomfortable. In the year 2075, there were only 76 students in the high school, which teaches up to class 10. But then within five years the number of students reached 693. The aim of the high school is to teach 750 students in the next academic session. For this, 771 applications were received when the notification was called to recruit 112 students. 75 percent of the students who applied are studying in private schools.

Darbar High School has been strengthened after the reconstruction of the building destroyed by the earthquake. The high school located near Ranipokhari in Kathmandu has a science laboratory, yoga practice room, Ayurvedic laboratory, computer laboratory, library, chamenagriha. Inside the classroom, the infrastructure like tables and chairs are also attractive and organized. There is also a provision for teaching through digital means. Adequacy of educational infrastructure has made it easy to raise the standard of education. High school also has extracurricular activities. Two sections are conducted in each class. 40 to 50 students study in a section. Due to the increase in the number of students, the school administration is discussing the issue of conducting classes in two shifts, morning and afternoon. As the Kathmandu Metropolitan City is also emphasizing on the improvement of public schools, there is a possibility that Darbar High School will be upgraded.

Like Durbar High School, there are many other community schools where the number of students has increased with the improvement of educational standards. Some public schools are unable to cope with the pressure and admit students only through entrance exams. Those who want to study in such schools are also students of private schools. This shows that public schools are the choice of students and parents for good education. This is further indicated by the practice of teaching the lower classes in private schools and enrolling them in public schools while giving SEE. Other public schools should give priority to improving the educational level while considering such aspirations of students and parents. Providing quality education by schools means producing skilled manpower for the country, making the future of the students bright.

The new constitution assigns the authority of school management to the local government. This means that one basis for evaluating the local level is the level of public schools. The local government should support and facilitate the management of adequate educational infrastructure for schools and the creation of a favorable environment for teaching and learning. Public schools are always successful if there is efficient management of the principal, professional honesty of the teachers and regular care of the parents, there is no need to worry about the lack of students, there is no trouble of merging with another school.
