On this day (April 27) in 1972, the first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, died. He died in Bucharest, Romania while undergoing treatment for cancer.

Born on September 21, 1909, Kwame is a Ghanaian politician, political theorist and revolutionary. Kwame, the founder of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organization of African Unity, is also a Soviet Union Lenin Peace Prize laureate.

Kwame was Prime Minister of Gold Quest (now Ghana) from 1952 to 1957. Kwame became Prime Minister on March 6, 1957, following Ghana's independence from Britain, and served until July 1, 1960. He then became the first President of Ghana on July 1, 1960. Kwame was the President of Ghana until he was ousted on February 24, 1966 by a coup. While he was on a visit to China, the Ghanaian army and police seized power. He then returned to West Africa and lived in exile in Guinea.
