The 9th Ganeshman Singh Memorial National Rating Chess Tournament has started at Sanepa in Lalitpur on Friday. Former Deputy Prime Minister Purna Bahadur Khadka inaugurated the competition at the Nepali Congress Party office.

Kapilvastu won the first prize of a Yamaha Saluto motorcycle with a total of 637,400 prize money. From 6-year-old Ankur Pokharel of the district to 80-year-old veteran player Sitaram Agarwal of Makhan Chess Club participated.

Coordinator Raju Tamrakar informed that 112 players will participate in the competition and 40 players will get prizes. The chief judge of the tournament, Soraj Tamrakar, said that after 7 rounds of matches, 4 players will play Super Knockout semi-finals and finals, while the remaining 108 players will play 9 rounds of matches.

Purushottam Silwal of Kathmandu, CM Sajin Maharjan of Sports Club, Badrilal Nepali of Lalitpur, Suroj Maharjan of Lalitpur, Sudeep Tamang, Janardan Shrestha of Kathmandu, Sushil Chaudhary of Pavilion Chess Academy, Som Ale of Sports Club, Rahul Chau Pradhan of Kavre, Kamal Shrestha of Sarlahi, Rajendra Prasad of Kathmandu Shrestha, Lalitpur's Ashok Mohan Shrestha, Dhanusha's Suryanarayan Das, Jhapa's Rajan Subedi, former Nepal champion Naveen Tandukar have won.

In an excellent match, unrated Toran Bhandari of Baglung scored a comfortable victory over Ashish Phuyal, who was rated 1912 higher than him under Karokan defense.
