The United Nations on Friday urged Sudan's warring factions to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered to save them from a "catastrophic" famine. About five million Sudanese could face food insecurity in the coming months as Sudan's nearly year-long war between rival generals continues to tear the country apart, according to a UN document obtained by AFP on Friday.

Millions at risk of starvation in Sudan: UN

Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and UHA's former ally Mohamed Hamdan Daglobeich have been fighting since April last year, killing tens of thousands and destroying infrastructure. Due to the war, the economy here has collapsed. It has also led to a severe humanitarian crisis and acute food shortages, and the country is on the brink of famine. In a letter to the Security Council, UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths warned that about 18 million Sudanese are facing food insecurity and warned that about 5 million people could fall into catastrophic food insecurity in some parts of the country in the coming months. He said that about 730,000 Sudanese children, including more than 240,000 from Darfur, are suffering from "severe" malnutrition.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, 'Aid organizations need safe, fast, sustainable and unhindered access to conflict-affected areas within Sudan. A massive mobilization of resources from the international community is also important. The UN's World Food Program has warned that the war will "cause the world's greatest hunger crisis". Jill Lawler, emergency chief for Sudan at the United Nations children's agency UNICEF, said there was enough aid in Port Sudan, but the problem was getting it to people in need.

Lawler said last week he led the first UN mission to reach Khartoum since the war began 11 months ago. He also said that the war is pushing Sudan towards starvation and famine.
