On this day (March 5) in 2013, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez died. Chavez died of cancer at the age of 58. Born on July 28, 1954, Chávez was the President of Venezuela from 1999 to 2013.

On this day in 2013: Chavez's death

Influenced by Simón Bolívar (1783–1830) and Simón Rodríguez (1769–1854) at the age of 20, Chávez became a captain in the army in 1881. In the 1990s, he raised his voice about economic and social inequality and poverty in Venezuela. In addition, he exposed government corruption and nepotism. He was elected president for the first time in the October 1998 election with 56.2 percent of the vote. Chávez changed Venezuela's then-constitution through a referendum and implemented socialism. Chávez, who had a strong struggle with American imperialism, implemented socialism with the aim of nationalizing industries and factories in the country and raising the living standards of the peasants and working class.

By the time he was first elected president, Chávez was not in favor of socialism. But there was a change in him after the resistance of the competitors and the attacks against the government. He formally started speaking about socialism from 2005.
