Machindra Football Club defeated Sangrila Football Club Morang 2-0 in extra time and won the title of Virat Gold Cup football tournament at Shanishar Shaheed Ground.
Saturday night's game was pushed to extra time after both failed to score in the scheduled time. Chhiring Gurung scored in the 113th minute and Yusup Thapalia scored in the 119th minute to give Machindra the title. Machindra got Rs 11 lakh and Sangrila Rs 550,000.
This is the first and third title of the season won by Machindra at Shahid Maidan. Earlier, Machindra had won KP Oli Cup and Wagmati Gold Cup. He participated in seven different competitions.
In an exciting game, the game was pushed to extra time when both teams missed scoring opportunities. Chiring scored a heading goal and gave the team the lead. Yusup Thapalia's corner ball was punched by goalkeeper Vishal Sunar. Chiring headed that ball. After 6 minutes, Machindra became stronger with the goal of Hisub. In the 25th minute of the game, Sangrila's hard shot from 25 yards away, Machchindra's goalkeeper Bishal Shrestha averted the team's crisis by making an excellent save. 35th Sangrial's Sushil Rai missed an opportunity in one versus one, the misfortune of the team appeared. In the 42nd minute of the game, Machindra's foreign player, Stepin, missed a goal from a one-on-one shot. His shot deflected off the post. In the 43rd minute, Machindra's Ayush Ghalan missed a shot from the penalty area and the game went to extra time.
The winner was awarded by Chief Minister of Koshi Province Kedar Karki and President of All Nepal Football Association Pankaj Vikram Nemwang.
Since 2018, this historical tournament has been held in the name of Mahendra Gold Cup in this ground until the 28th edition. It was started in the year 2068 after the establishment of Gold Cup Trust in the name of Virat Gold Cup.
