On this day (March 27) in 1968, Yuri Gagarin died. He is the world's first astronaut. Born on March 9, 1934 in Gazhatsk, Russia (then Soviet Union), Gagarin graduated from school in 1951. He then studied flight with Gagarin, who enrolled in Saratov College.

Gagarin's 'Vostok-1' spacecraft, launched from Moscow on April 12, 1961, reached a height of 301 km in 108 minutes. The spacecraft was able to orbit the earth at a speed of 27,400 km. Soon after, Gagarin garnered worldwide attention. Because of this, he was given the title of 'Order of Lenin' and Hero of the Soviet Union. After his death, the city where he was born was named after Gagarin.
