Export of 400 megawatts of electricity to India every day before rains

The Authority's goal is to meet domestic demand and export about 1200 megawatts of electricity in accordance with the competitive market and bilateral agreements
In this financial year, we have bought electricity worth 15.21 billion from India and so far we have sold it to India worth 13.47 billion. By the end of June, this gap has been completed and Nepal is becoming a net exporter for the first time. -Kulman Ghising, Executive Director, Electricity Authority

As the flow of water in the rivers has started to increase, along with the increase in power generation, exports to India have started. The Nepal Electricity Authority has started sending the excess electricity consumed within the country to India from Monday night. The Authority has started selling 400 MW electricity per day at competitive rates in the Indian Energy Exchange (IX) market.

Export of 400 megawatts of electricity to India every day before rains

"Since May 14, we have started exporting 400 megawatts of electricity to India every day," said Kulman Ghising, executive director of the authority.

Ghising said that the goal is to export about 1,200 megawatts of electricity that will be surplus after meeting the internal demand this year in accordance with the competitive market and bilateral agreements. "We have sent a list of projects to the Central Electricity Authority of India for export approval," he said. According to the bilateral agreement, a proposal has been sent to the Central Electricity Authority of India for approval after entering into an agreement with the Power Trade Company for the sale of about 200 megawatts of electricity to the state of Bihar and with the NTPC Electricity Trading Corporation (NVVN) for the sale of about 400 megawatts to the state of Haryana.

The Central Electricity Authority of India has so far approved the export of 656 megawatts of electricity produced by 15 hydropower projects in Nepal to the competitive market. Trishuli, Devighat, Marsyangdi, Kaligandaki-A, Middle Marsyangdi, Likhu-4, Chilime, Solukhola, Kabeli B-1, Lower Modi, Dordi Khola, Solu Khola (Dudhkoshi), Upper Kalangad, Upper Chamelia, Upper Dordi-A projects approved have received.

According to the mid-term electricity agreement, 110 megawatts of electricity has been approved to be sold to NVVN for five years from June to October every year, according to the authority. NVVN has been selling the electricity to the state of Haryana. Nepal has also got permission to buy and sell electricity in the real time market. Currently, out of 656 MW, 586 MW is being exported from Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur 400 KV international transmission line and 70 MW is being exported from Mahendranagar-Tanakpur 132 KV transmission line.

Ghising said that there is some problem of power supply in industries of Birganj area as one circuit is being closed and wire (conductor) is being changed to expand the capacity of 132 kV double circuit transmission line from Piluwa substation in Bara to Parwanipur substation. "The work of replacing the conductor will be completed in 2/3 days, after which the problem will be solved," he said. After replacing the conductors of both circuits, the current capacity of Piluwa-Parpanipur 132 KV transmission line, which can transmit about 200 megawatts of electricity, will be doubled. According to the authority, electricity will also be exported from Parwanipur substation to India.

In the winter of the current financial year, the authority imported electricity worth 15.21 billion rupees from India to meet the electricity demand in the country. Since July of the current financial year, electricity worth 13.47 billion rupees has been exported.

With the onset of the dry season, the water flow in the rivers will decrease and the electricity production will decrease, so it is imported from India to meet the demand. According to the authority, 1.81 billion 4.8 million units of electricity have been imported. In the current financial year, the Authority has imported more electricity worth 1.74 billion rupees compared to exports. The authority said that the price of imported electricity is cheaper than that of exported electricity. According to the authority, the average price per unit of exported electricity is 9 rupees 2 paisa, while the average price per unit of imported electricity is 8 rupees 38 paisa. In the last financial year, electricity worth 10 billion 457 million rupees was exported.

Ghising, the executive director of the authority, said that due to the result of the electricity exported in the rest of May and June, the current financial year has become a net exporter. "Until 6/7 years ago, there was only electricity import, even though we started exporting 2/3 years ago, the import was more than the export, now we have seen the situation of becoming an exporter," he said. In the current financial year, imports are more than exports by 1 billion 74 crore rupees, he said, as a result of electricity exports in the rest of the period, they will fill this gap and remain net exporters.

According to Madan Timsina, the deputy executive director of the authority, the total electricity connected capacity is 3 thousand 141 megawatts. The total connected capacity has reached 3141, including 1980 MW from private sector hydropower projects, 583 MW from Authority's hydropower projects, 493 MW from Authority's subsidiary companies, and 116 MW of private solar power.

He wrote on social media that after the flow of water in rivers and streams started to increase, electricity generation started at full capacity from Kaligandaki A, Marsyangdi, Mathilo Trishuli 3A, Modi and other projects. He said that now the domestic production rate has reached 1600 megawatts and the peak load has reached 2050 megawatts. According to Ghisingh, the internal consumption during peak time is 2000 MW. 7/8 years ago the daily electricity consumption was around one and a half million units, but now it has increased to 4 to 4.5 million units.
