Grishasthi poet, beloved ghazal writer

He died at the age of 67 during treatment at Manipal Teaching Hospital in Pokhara. He was admitted to the hospital on Monday after suffering from jaundice and pneumonia. In the year 2033, he came down to Prithvi Narayan Campus from Deurali Ukali of the then Rupa Village Panchayat and met the writer Sarubhakta around the year 035. Before that, in 033, he had entered the literature by publishing a story named Vidambana in the local 'Himdoot' newspaper. Sarubhakta liked the farce he performed in a program in the campus. At that time, Sarubhakta, who was doing a one-act play from the Yuva Natak Parivar (UNAP), needed an artist to perform a full-length play. He met Pragya Pangeni.

His real name was Shivraj Pangeni. The foreign teacher had hung 'Prakat'. Sarubhakta gave Pangeni her first chance in the play 'Euta Ghar Katha Hai'.

In 2038, he acted in the play 'Holiardhako Kalo Akash' directed by Sarubhakta. Pangeni was awarded as the best actor for the play in the drama festival organized by the Nepal Government Pragya Pratishthan in 2039. He acted in plays like Sarubhakta, Vishwa Shakya and others till the 40s. "He was a refined and natural actor," recalled Sarubhakta.

As much as he used to act brilliantly, he wrote equally brilliant poems. He used to use the words of the rural environment in poetry. He used to express village stories, grief, sorrow and poverty in poetry. Poems written using a combination of popular folk and jharra words were preferred. Sarubhakta gave him the nickname 'grihasthi poet'. He has woven the daily lives of old parents who are left alone at home by their children in the poem 'Aksar Batulechaurma Amamaru'.

In the second generation, he left another mark with a song of 14 lines. Wrote songs of tears and separation. Yo Man Kaai Aljheko Che (2056) and Junko Chithi Junalai (2060) are collections of his farewell songs. The song included in the first collection was

Music coordinator Sunil Bardeva handed over Pangeni's 'Yo Mann Kaati Aljheko Che' song collection to singer Sanjeev Singh in 1988. Singh chose the song and recorded it. Singh, who is currently in America, said that the song was the 'turning point' of his singing life. An employee of the Regional Agricultural Research Centre, Lumley, he conceived the 'Akshar Yatra' in the 50s. Bhavna Parivar, Navneet Sahitya Sagar and Ghazal Sandhya went to Tatsthan on the third Saturday of every month and started the 'Akshar Yatra' in the nature of creating and reciting literature. The program continues till today.

Lately, he has been established by romantic ghazals. 'Tapp tap water point...', 'Glass filled with your hands...', 'It was a different pleasure to hold him in the hand and draw the river...', 'The waves rose in the lake at dusk...', 'Why are you hurrying now?' Basaula Ni Bhare Rati...' and his famous sringarik ghazals.

Two decades ago, the ghazal recital program 'Pranayama Pranag Dai' was grandly completed in Gurukul of Kathmandu. After that show, he became more popular among the younger generation. He has recited ghazals in more than 15 series of 'Pranayama Pranag Dai' in different cities of Nepal and abroad. The young generation longed to listen to his ghazals after buying tickets.

He published the ghazal collection 'Pranayavedaka Richharu' in 064. His ghazals were also accused of obscenity. However, he used to argue that his ghazals are not coincidences, but touches. He used to say, 'Describing beauty becomes obscene is a sexually stunted view.' He used to say that love is eternal and can happen at any age. Since sex and literature are both life, he thought that literature without sex is like vegetables without salt.

Netra Smriti Award, Prativimba Natya Samman, Birendra Aishwarya Seva Medal, Best Songwriter award from Radio Nepal and former president of Pokhreli Youth Cultural Family, he used to say, 'Literature gave name, not price. He did not reach where he should have reached.

He had to collect funds for the treatment of the last stage of the writer's life. Due to lack of funds for his treatment, the cultural family started a fundraising campaign from Tuesday at the request of his relatives and family members. Though Pangeeni is equally proficient in acting and ghazal, Sarubhakta feels more empowered as a poet and lyricist. "His untimely death is a great loss for Pokhara," he says.
