The departmental team Tribhuvan Army Club has reached the finals of the 14th edition of the Control Itahari Gold Cup Football. In the first semi-final held at Itahari Stadium on Wednesday night, Army came close to the title after defeating the previous winners Sagarmatha Club Morang 2-1 in a penalty shootout.
After both teams played a goalless draw at the scheduled time, they were pushed directly to the penalty shootout.
Goalkeeper Vikesh Kuthu became the hero in Army's victory. He saved three of Everest's penalties. He also saved three Birtamod United penalties in the quarterfinals. Vikesh stopped Vijay Bhujel, Stefan Sameer Vinong and Priso. Only Diwakar Chaudhary scored. Bimal Ghartimagar's shot was blocked.
Army's Fatteman Ghale and Ripu Bhulan scored the goals. Navayug Shrestha's shot hit the fence and went out. Jitendra Karki's penalty was stopped by Everest's goalkeeper Priso.
Goalkeeper Vikesh was elected man of the match on Wednesday. He got 10,000. With this win, Army avenged their defeat against Everest in the final of the 12th edition. At that time, Sagarmatha won the title by defeating Army 4-3 in the penalty shootout.
This year, Everest's goal of achieving a hat-trick of titles has ended in the semi-finals. Last year's runners-up Church Boys United Kathmandu and host Rashtriya Jagriti Club will compete in Thursday's semi-final.
