The Press Council of Nepal has expressed interest in arresting Kantipur Media Group Chairman Kailash Sirohia from his office in Thapathali and terrorizing the independent press. Chairman of the Council Balkrishna Basnet and Chief Officer Jhavindra Bhusal came to Kantipur office Thapathali on Thursday and discussed with the journalists of the news room about the incident of Tuesday and its effect on the news room.
In that regard, President Basnet is of the opinion that any activity carried out by the state should not be allowed to disturb the values of the independent press and create a situation in which the newsroom panics .
He said that the council is aware of the opinion brought by media organizations and editors that President Sirohia was arrested with prejudice and revenge based on the news published by Kantipur.
Stating that the Council has always been aware of activities that undermine the rights of the free press given by the Constitution and laws of Nepal, President Basnet expressed the view that the press should not be allowed to perform its independent role due to any incident.
