Chief Minister of Gandaki Province, Khagraj Adhikari, has said that life imprisonment should be provided for the arsonists.
Speaking at a discussion program on forest policy with policy makers organized by the Community Forest Consumer Federation of Nepal (Fecofan) Gandaki Province in Pokhara on Saturday, he said that the provision should be made in the federal law.
"When the forest is set on fire knowingly or unknowingly, the birds there are dead, the habitat is destroyed, the wetlands are dried up, the roots are dried up," he said. We have raw rocks, floods and landslides.
He said that if strict action can be taken against those who set fires in the federal law, it will be easier to control the damage and environmental pollution caused by fires. He emphasized that the Community Forest Users' Federation should mobilize the community by creating a special action plan to control the fires. "The community forest user committee should make a special action plan to control fires, not just because they want the means, but the community should be mobilized," he said.
He claimed that in some places, the users of the community forest set fires.
