He said he was saddened to announce the death of Chief General Francis Omondi Ogola. The helicopter that took off from a local primary school in Elgeyo Maraquet County crashed at 2:20 PM local time and caught fire.

The President said Ogola left Nairobi early in the morning to meet troops deployed to fight bandits in troubled areas and oversee the ongoing school renovation work. The Kenya Air Force has sent an aviation investigation team to find out the cause of the accident. He has also announced three days of mourning from Friday.

He said that the nation will mourn for 3 days starting from today, April 19, in honor of the life of the commander who lost his life not only while in office but also in active military duty.
