Defending champion Koka Gough has made a winning start in the US Open-2024 on Monday. She defeated Bharvara Gracheva easily 6-2, 6-0 in the first round of her title defense campaign.
The 20-year-old Gough spent only 66 minutes for this victory at the Arthur Ace Stadium. Olympic champion Chinese athlete Zheng Qinwen had to struggle for victory in the first stage.
She beat Amanda Anisimova 4-6, 6-4 and 6-2. Former men's champion Dominic Thiem was defeated in the first round, bringing his Grand Slam tennis career to an end.
2020 winner Thiem lost his match against Ben Selton 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2. He has already announced that he will retire at the end of this season.
