Disability Steering Committee to be formed in Lumbini

Lumbini Chief Minister Chetnarayan Acharya said that the Provincial Disability Steering Committee will be formed through the Ministry of Social Development. The National Federation of Disabled Persons submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Acharya on Sunday with the demands that a disability steering committee should be formed, an effective policy should be formulated and implemented for the field of persons with disabilities, and opportunities should be provided to persons with disabilities according to their qualifications and abilities in every agency of the state.

While reading the memorandum, Chief Minister Acharya has expressed his commitment to form a province coordination committee or a disability province directorate committee in Lumbini province in coordination with the Ministry of Social Development. According to Section 41 of the Act on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2074, the provinces have been given the right to form the Provincial Coordination Committee, i.e. the Provincial Director Committee.

However, the Lumbini province has been demanding that the National Federation of Disabled Persons should be formed by the government and that the directorate committee should not be formed in Lumbini. The provincial government is committed to solving the demands and problems raised by you. We will form the steering committee soon," said Chief Minister Acharya while understanding the memorandum. "The provincial government is also ready to make other structural reforms."

Disabled people are deprived of the right to information, so the disabled federation has demanded that an interpreter be appointed in the provincial assembly immediately. They have also demanded that completed and under-construction buildings, roads, parking lots within the provincial premises should be made accessible and disabled-friendly, survey the living standards of people with disabilities and create an action plan to solve the problems, and establish a disability management and information branch under the chief minister's office. .

Humnath Adhikari, president of the National Disabled Federation of Nepal Lumbini Province, said that the provincial government has not yet prepared a program targeting people with disabilities.

People with disabilities suffer social humiliation including discrimination, abuse, and violence in the family, community and society because of their disability, they are deprived of their fundamental right to education based on their individual needs, they die prematurely due to the lack of quality and accessible health services, accessible physical structures are not disability-friendly. , being deprived of communication services and being deprived of participation and service facilities received from the state, not using and respecting the skills of people with disabilities and having to spend a dependent life in the family, being deprived of social and cultural participation, being deprived of decision-making responsibilities, not being able to participate in the policy making level of the state, The presiding officer also said that access to social justice has not been established.
