Highlights

  • Lack of budget for equipment

During the rainy season, patients who have been bitten by snakes keep coming for treatment. In recent times, dengue patients have also increased. Both these types of patients have thin blood. To solve that problem, platelets (white blood in common language) are needed.

Dhaulagiri Hospital requires one/two white blood cells daily for surgery. But due to lack of storage of white blood in Baglung, they have to be referred to Pokhara.

Nepal Red Cross Society Baglung branch's blood transfusion center is not able to store white blood, so some patients have to be referred even with manpower. Dhaulagiri Hospital has specialist doctors for surgery, but white blood, which is considered essential for surgery, is not available . Hospital doctors say that some patients are forced to be referred to Pokhara due to lack of blood. It takes two/three more hours to reach Pokhara through

referral. Red Cross is trying to add this service to Baglung as there is a risk of death of the patient at that time. But the Chairman Jagannath Acharya said that only some of the equipment that came did not reach the donor. "This is D category blood transfusion, we are trying to make it C category," said Acharya, "at least we are trying to manage to store white blood."

A competent machine is needed to separate red blood cells, platelets and plasma that can be whitened from donated blood. Acharya said that although Raktasanchar bought some equipment and brought it, due to the lack of budget for the purchase of other necessary equipment, the goods that have been in storage for 2 years have been kept in the store . We have repeatedly requested all the people's representatives representing the district, even the local level. Let's operate this blood transfusion center even with a little help,' he said, 'If at least 35 lakh rupees are collected, it will be operational immediately.'

According to Guru Prasad Sharma, a source at the blood transfusion center, the maximum blood storage capacity is only 50 pints. He claims that if the existing equipment can be brought into operation, the capacity will also double. "In normal conditions, we have collected a small amount of money," Sharma said, "when accident patients come, this capacity is not enough." At that time, there is a lack of blood .

When more white blood is needed during the rainy season, most of the patients have to be referred to Pokhara. Amit Dhungana said. "Patients with some other problems also need platelets and plasma," he said. Up to 400 patients are coming to Dhaulagiri Hospital for treatment every day.

There is no blood transfusion center even in neighboring districts Parbat and Myagdi. Because of this, the patient who needs blood has been brought to Dhaulagiri hospital immediately. Chairman Acharya also conveyed this obligation in the district assembly through the district coordination committee. After that some of the people's representatives of the municipality have promised to support, while some of them said that they are afraid of Beruju. If two or more municipalities can invest as a common plan, there is also a provision to get federal government subsidy from it. Acharya has also requested the head of the municipality to support the campaign.
