Highlights

  • There are scattered accounts of people involved in co-op abuse divorcing their wives. However, it can be said that it is not natural if the story of every person accused of embezzlement is the same.

With Congress Vice President Dhanraj Gurung accused of misappropriating the money deposited by savers in the cooperative, unnatural facts related to this sector are being made public. Gurung has revealed that he got divorced from his wife Jyoti Gurung in 2076 after allegations were made against him.

Earlier too, there have been reports of people involved in co-operative abuse divorcing their wives. However, it can be said that it is not natural if the story of every person accused of embezzlement is the same. Further research is also needed on this.

Just as marriage is the right of companionship between two people, divorce is also freedom. In the meantime, they can decide how long the two will stay together or not through the use of their sovereignty. It is also a very personal context. But cooperative operators have been misusing this subject. They use the money saved in cooperatives to invest in various organizations to build another level of financial gain and divorce their wives when the chances of their misdeeds being revealed and being prosecuted increase. Especially to protect the property created on the basis of irregularity, it seems that the measures of passing in the name of the wife and divorce have been devised.

Bharat Maharjan is one co-operative operator who devised a similar solution. He, the then manager of Sumeru Cooperative, is accused of embezzling a large amount of 10.34 billion rupees saved by 34,778 savers in four branch offices. Ironically, he transferred the embezzled property in his wife's name. Misappropriation was sure to cause problems in the cooperative and the Maharjan would be trapped. Then they went to court and got a divorce. Even more strangely, he fled to Britain with his family on the documents that he was married to the same woman. Such is the story of cooperative operators GB Rai, Sudhir Basnet, Ichcharaj Tamang. The only difference is that others have not publicly remarried. But some are continuing the 'marital relationship' by divorcing. Therefore, it is not difficult to say that their divorce is only 'paper'.

Dhanraj Gurung also went to court and after a year of divorce, the details of what he did to wife Jyoti while taking a loan from the cooperative have been made public. He has been saying that he divorced wife Jyoti on 29th February 2076. But on February 3, 2077, he took a loan of 1.2 million from Miteri Cooperative, keeping him as the right holder. This is the same cooperative, where Jyoti was the general manager of misappropriation of Rs. That's why the co-operative director claims that they got a 'paper' divorce.

Another trend is revealed by the incident involving the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives, Rishikesh Pokharel and his wife Anjala Koirala. Chairman Pokharel has been accused of misappropriating funds from the cooperative he opened by promoting his wife. Pokharel and his wife Anjala Koirala have been blacklisted after keeping the documents of borrowers who had taken loans from cooperatives in banks and financial institutions and embezzling around 110 million. Now the victim has named the complaint. Koirala, who was the director of Umagouri Agricultural Cooperative in Morang, left when the crisis started in the cooperative. Recently, the detailed details of these two incidents have been revealed to the public. However, there is a common tendency for men to embezzle the funds of the cooperative and make the wife a partner in the financial crime.

The view of women in our society is problematic from many angles. There is no longer a situation where women are collectively and institutionally deprived of their human rights as in the past. But there are problems. In particular, not providing equal opportunities, not having equal participation in the decision-making process, not wanting to give economic rights has become the general character of not only political organizations and political individuals, but also the Nepalese community. However, the attitude of the directors of the cooperative is reprehensible. Because, they are making the commitment of marriage a tool to cover cooperative fraud. Such a tendency to back down in the place of empowerment but move forward in the place of taking away is a matter of concern.
