  • A group of locals from Jai Prithvi Municipality, who had walked for 12 days through Saipal to Mansarovar, were turned back by the security personnel from Purang County in China from Kathan Checkpoint.

The Chinese administration has sent back the Nepalese who walked to Mansarovar through Bajhang's Urai Naka to get water for offering to the goddess Masta. The Chinese administration did not allow the Nepali people who were walking from various villages of Bajhang to go to Mansarovar through the Chinese market Taklakot, saying that they were 'ordered from above'.

Kathan is a checkpoint under the Chinese local administration "Purang County" near the Urai border. All those who enter from Urai are allowed to proceed only after searching the Kathan checkpoint.

Chandra Bahadur Singh of Jaipruthvi Municipality-1 Kailash in Bajhang said that he went there because he needed the water of Mansarovar to worship his gods and goddesses, but was sent back by the Chinese administration. On July 9, the locals along with Singh, who left Bajhang, were sent back from Kathan on the 22nd. At least 30 people who went to Mansarovar in July alone have been sent back by the Chinese administration through the border.

'There is a tradition to offer water from Mansarovar to the goddess Masta, for that we went to Mansarovar, but the Chinese administration turned us back from the checking point at a place called Kathan in China, 30 kilometers from Saipal in Bajhang,' said Chandra Bahadur.

They also deleted some of the mobile photos we had. After that, we tried to go to Mansarovar through Hilsa Naka in Humla but we returned home when we found out that the pass issued from another district would not allow us to enter,” he said.

It takes a day's walk to reach Hilsa in Humla from Urai Naka. According to Chandra Bahadur, according to religious and cultural traditions, the water of Mansarovar must be offered to the Goddess, but it is sad that there is an obstacle to go to Mansarovar. He said that this could not happen because the administration should facilitate it.

The chief district officer of Bajhang, Bishwamitra Kuinkel, said that the administration is issuing passes according to the agreement that only 30 kilometers from the border area can be traveled between Nepal and China. He said that the locals were saddened when the Chinese side told them not to send them for Mansarovar, even though they were informed to go ahead.

"The Bajhang administration had issued a pass only up to Taklakot," said Prazia Kuinkel, "but when the administration tried to go beyond the distance of the pass, the Chinese administration did not allow them to go." To go from Bajhang to Taklakot, Purang County in Tibet has been giving permission for 8 days every month from 8th to 11th and 20th to 23rd. According to Prazia Kuinkel, the pass is issued after the Chinese side has given permission to enter.

Lately, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a procedure to open 14 border crossings to China and arrange a 5-year entry pass for people coming and going. This procedure has not been implemented. At present, in coordination with the Chinese administration, the district administration offices connected to the northern border issue passes only to go to the Chinese market within a distance of 30 km.
