Highlights

  • While the motive for the murder appears to be robbery, no record of Shah and Pandey's prior acquaintance has been found.

51-year-old Babisinh Shah has been arrested on the charge of shooting and killing Nepali student Muna Pandey in Houston, Texas. Shah was arrested within a few hours after the police released the photo as a suspect on Wednesday morning.

CCTV footage showed him leaving Muna's apartment at 9:48 pm on Saturday, August 24. According to the police, Shah was arrested during a street check after 8 pm local time on Wednesday. After the police released the photo, the Houston police arrested Shah after receiving many calls about the identity of the possible killer. He is being held in the Harris County Jail.

"Harris County district attorney has filed a case in court on charges of murder with an illegal weapon, preliminary investigation suggests robbery, no record of prior acquaintance between Shah and Pandey," New York-based editor of New York.com Kishore Panthi told Kantipur.

The police are preparing to present him in court on September 3 on the charge of murder and on September 5 on the charge of possession of an illegal weapon. It appears that Muna was killed after returning to the apartment at night after working at the Verizon Mobile Store. Police were alerted after Muna was found with multiple gunshot wounds in her apartment on Monday evening. Police found him dead.

Muna from Bhojpur went to America in 2021 for her graduation studies. She was studying nursing at Houston Community College.

Muna initially stayed with a friend from Nepal. She lived alone in an apartment for some time. According to Anita Pandey, Muna's mother, who is currently living in Kandaghari, Kathmandu, she received the news about her daughter's murder on Tuesday morning.
