Substitute Sergio Camelo scored twice in extra time as Spain beat hosts France to win Olympic football gold on Friday night. Trailing 1-3, Thierry Henry's team staged a brilliant comeback to level the match 3-3, but Spain won in extra time.
Enzo Milot gave France the lead in the 11th minute, but two goals from Fermin Lopez and a free kick from Alex Baina saw Spain lead 3-1 at half-time. Maghnez Akliouch scored in the 79th minute to give France hope. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a penalty in the third minute of injury time to bring France to a 3-3 draw.
Rayo Vallecano's forward Kamelo gave Spain the lead in the 10th minute of the 30-minute extra time, then sealed the victory with a counter-attack goal in the last second. Spain has won gold in football for the first time since 1992. Three years ago in the Tokyo Olympics, Spain was defeated in the final.
France has not won Olympic football gold since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Spain is dominating world football. Just last month, Spain won the European Championship in Germany and recently they won the Euro U-19 by defeating France. Spain's women's team also won the World Cup last year.
France's suffering is not limited to this. In the 2022 World Cup final, France lost to Argentina in a penalty shootout. Even in the World Cup, France made a similar comeback but lost in the end.
