  • Yama Bahadur who rescued more than 1200 snakes

He used to catch and play with snakes while studying at school. No gloves, no other safety measures. If he got angry, he would kill the snake by throwing it on the ground. If a snake was seen inside someone's house, the village would call him. By the time he studied in class 9/10, he killed many snakes from inside the houses of the village. The same 32-year-old Yama Bahadur Rawat from Kohalpur Municipality-3 Banke has now become a good friend of the snake.

After passing SLC, when he started studying Forestry, it was only after that that Yama Bahadur got motivated to start snake conservation and rescue . It was then that he learned the need for protective equipment including hooks, hoop bags, tongs, globes and glasses for safe rescue.

Having studied from forestry to graduation, he is now not only engaged in snake rescue, he is also going to different places to give necessary training for snake rescue . Yama Bahadur claims to have rescued more than 1,200 snakes while working as a ranger in Banke National Park for about 6 years from 2072.

'I killed a lot of snakes when I was young, I didn't know that conservation should be done,' he said, 'When I studied forestry, I also learned about the conservation and rescue of snakes from my elders.' Tells . On the one hand, the risk of own life, on the other hand, after knowing that one should not kill the snake, one feels regret.

After his interest in snake conservation increased during his studies, he also studied the status of pythons in Banke National Park for his graduation thesis. During his studies, he rescued 150 pythons and was a forester at the District Forest Office Banke at the same time. He said that he was comfortable in snake rescue because his studies and work went hand in hand.

Shuklaphanta National Park became the place where Yam Bahadur knew well about snakes and rescued them. He also rescued a red snake (coral snake) in the park . The red snake was rescued from two places - Ranatharu community homestay near the park and on the road from Beldandi to Belauri in the southern region. "At that time, I stayed in the hospital for one night because I was afraid that I might have been bitten by a snake," he said about the risks he faced during the snake rescue, "Dhanna is not bitten." Red snakes are found in very small numbers in Nepal. According to him, so far it has been seen in Chitwan National Park, Banke, Bardia and Shuklaphanta. Its size is smaller than other snakes, it is not a poisonous snake .

Shuklaphanta Park He says that the rescue is easy because the residents living near the snakes worship it. ``The residents of that area do not kill snakes, they worship them as snakes, that's why they were able to rescue them,'' says Yama Bahadur While he was there, he rescued a 15 feet long python from Bhimdatta Municipality-10 Jimuwa, far away from the park. Which was the biggest of those he rescued . He has also saved the lives of many people during snake rescue.

Not all snakes are venomous. Therefore, he advises that snakes should not be too scared or afraid of Dashiha . Three years ago, according to his study in Shuklaphanta, out of 56 species of reptiles, only 15 species were found poisonous. While working in the District Forest Office Banke, he also found a new species of Mausuli for Nepal. When he went to the forest to cut wood, he saw 2 different types of lizards and brought them home, which he found out to be a new species for Nepal.

Yama Bahadur is still involved in snake rescue. Along with the rescue, they also run to train about it. Last time, the city police of Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city were also given training on snake rescue . Now the city police are rescuing snakes from different places of the city everyday. Even after going to Banke Park, he said that he rescued more than 70 snakes.
