  • 144 people committed suicide in Makwanpur last financial year

A couple from Hetaunda sub-metropolitan city-5 Latinath was found dead in their house. 62-year-old Keshav Bhandari and his wife Ambika Bhandari, 56, of Latinath Chisapani near Hetaunda market were found dead on Wednesday.

Keshav was found hanging by a nylon rope trap on an iron hook for hanging a fan and Ambika was killed by a sharp weapon on her neck. A local woman informed the police after she saw that the deceased Ambika did not pick up when she called on her mobile phone and locked the door when she reached home. After his report, the police arrived and broke the door and found Keshav hanging and Ambika on the floor in a pool of blood.

The police initially speculated that Keshav may have hanged himself after killing his wife. The son and daughter-in-law lived in another room in that house, but they were not there in the afternoon. The bodies of the hanging husband and wife were in the same room. Even though parents and sons lived in the same house, they used to cook and eat rice separately. For the past 4 months, Bhandari has been taking anti-depressants.

Superintendent of Police Rizal said that the blood on the floor was sent to a laboratory in Kathmandu for investigation whether it was Ambika's or not. "We are doing more research," he said.

Last year, an elderly man of Hetaunda sub-metropolitan city-1 committed suicide by hanging himself in his own house. The incidence of suicide in Makwanpur is increasing every year. According to District Police Office Makwanpur Last year, 144 people including 52 women committed suicide. In the previous fiscal year, 125 people committed suicide. Compared to the previous fiscal year, 21 more people committed suicide last year.
