Highlights

  • Police and revenue investigation started on suspicion of relabelling
  • The importer company did not obtain permission from the relevant regulatory body for burning two and a half truckloads of cigarettes that were expired and soaked in water.

The police and the Internal Revenue Office have started an investigation into the suspicion of relabelling and selling Marlboro cigarettes of foreign brands. Punya Rizal, head of the Internal Revenue Office, Lahan, confirmed that he was aware of the labeling of cigarettes stored inside the solar cement industry in Mirchaiya, Siraha, and that the investigation is being carried out with the help of the police.

Dilip Khang, Information Officer of Commercial Supplies and Consumer Protection Office, Birgunj office, said that it is illegal to sell cigarettes with another sticker instead of them. "You can't put a sticker with a higher price on the place where the real price is and sell it," he said, "Such work is relabeling." Toyanath Sapkota, head of Madar, Siraha Customs Office, said that it would not be wrong if the revenue of the higher price charged in the auction was submitted. But he says that if the revenue of the low price of import is paid and the new price is kept higher and sold, it will be fraud and revenue evasion.

Cigarettes produced by a company called PT Philip Morris in Indonesia have been affixed with a higher price sticker instead of the actual price. Instead of cigarettes with stickers of the Internal Revenue Department, new stickers have been affixed and sold.

Marlboro's two types of cigarettes 'Marlboro' and 'Marlboro Gold' have been found like this. The Consumer Protection Act 075 prohibits relabelling. Such work is illegal. According to the information received by Kantipur, the actual price of the cigarettes written only as Marlboro is Rs 230.

A sticker written 280 rupees is pasted on top of the plastic cover at the place where the price is written. A new sticker of Rs 350 has been pasted on the place where the actual price of Marlboro Gold is Rs 280.

In this way, it has been found that 50 and 70 rupees were taken more in the same exchange. It is suspected that the revenue to be generated from the said amount has been cheated.

Cigarette warehouse solar in the cement industry!

Marlboro's relabelling cigarettes suspected of revenue evasion were stored inside the solar cement industry at Siraha Mirchaiya. Although the workers working there suspected, no one was informed about the possession of cigarettes.

On July 21, there was a commotion everywhere after some workers lit cigarettes inside the industrial premises. “Activities within the industry were questionable. We are working workers, afraid that if we say something, we will be fired. After there was a lot of discussion about this, about two and a half truckloads of cigarettes were burned because they were expired and soaked in water," said a worker. "After that, everyone came to know."

A week after smoking cigarettes, workers saw cigarette cartoons again. They saw in the rooms of the high-ranking employees working in the industry. There was an uproar in the industry on Saturday evening. Then the police reached the industry. The team of the area police office, Mirchaiya, said that three cartons of cigarettes were seized from the industry. Mirchaiya Deputy Superintendent of Police Panchkumar Bakhu said that the police have seized the cigarettes and are investigating. "We have brought some cigarettes in three cartons, investigation is going on," said DSP Bakhu, "everything will come out after the investigation."

Shailendra Khatri of Jagdamba Overseas, a sister organization of importer Shankar Group of Industries, urged not to complicate the issue as the cigarettes are manufactured abroad. "There is no need to hide this issue, these are cigarettes made abroad, we have brought such cigarettes back from the market and burned them. If there is any left, I will give you the details, we will destroy it.

A worker working in the cement industry says that there are still many cigarettes in the cement industry. Jeevan Nepal, General Manager of Solar Cement Industry, did not get in touch when trying to understand this matter. Gurudayal Singh, the technical head of the industry, claimed that the cement industry was kept only to burn useless cigarettes. Cigarette importer Jagdamba Overseas belongs to the Shankar Group. The cement industry also belongs to the Shankar Group," said Singh. "Cigarettes were not used after being soaked in water, so they were brought here only to burn them."
