Highlights

  • This year cardamom was bought and sold at Rs 84,000 per annum, last year it was Rs 55,000 per annum in this season.

Ganesh Thapa of Mikwakhola rural municipality-1 Khokling sold three tons of cardamom on Friday. In Taplejung, cardamom is sold at the rate of 40 kilos. He came to Fungling market with a sack of cardamom on the roof of his jeep and gave it to Bhadraveer Regmi, president of Cardamom Traders Association.

He sold it at the rate of 2,100 per kg and took 252,000 rupees. Based on Friday's sale, the price of cardamom is Rs 84,000. When calculating the quintal, it is 2 lakh 10 thousand. In this season last year, the salary was Rs 55,000. Compared to that, it is more than 28 thousand rupees. Cardamom production starts from the last week of July. The crop can be harvested in October.

Regmi, who bought the first product of this year on July 28, says that he spent 80,000 rupees at the rate of 2,000 per kg. He bought the first product from Mohamalal Limbu of Fungling Municipality-1.

Mohamalal sold 46 kilos (one man 6 kilos). Cardamom, which is traded on the basis of mana in the hills, is traded on the basis of sacks when exported to the plains and India. A bag contains 50 kg. Taplejung is the cardamom zone that produces the most cardamom in Nepal. There are 61 wards in one municipality and eight rural municipalities, except for Paktanglung Rural Municipality-7 Olangchungola, all 60 wards are farmed.

Since it is the main source of income of the district, interest from farmers to traders is on the price of cardamom. Balamani Baral, President of Cardamom Zone, says that the produce of the district will be sold to the traders of Birtamod in Jhapa.

Baral said that the transport fare from Taplejung to Jhapa is purchased in the district with a profit of up to 2,000. "Nowadays, there is a competitive market, sometimes transactions are being done in Taplejung at the same price as in Jhapa, this cannot be said," said Baral. He says that transactions are done based on the exchange rate. 98% of Nepal's cardamom is exported to India. According to Nirmal Bhattarai, Central President of Cardamom Traders Association, which reaches countries like Pakistan, Saudi, Qatar, Bahrain from India. Nepalese cardamom is used as a spice there.

Since the government does not set the price and there is no support price, the farmer has to sell based on the price of the trader. There is a lot of difference in the price when the production starts and ends. Bhattarai said that last year, Jhapa's Birtamod had a turnover of up to 93,000 per person. President of Taplejung Baral says that they are just like coordinators in the district. "When we asked the traders from below (Birtamod), we will buy based on what they say," he added, "if it increases, we will buy more, if it decreases, it will decrease."

Cardamom is cultivated in 42 districts of Nepal. According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, 12,500 hectares of land are cultivated across the country. Most occur in cells. There is data that cultivation is done on around 11,000 hectares of land here. Annual production is around 6,500 tons. According to Cardamom Zone, the production of 2800 tons will be done in Taplejung. Due to the fluctuations in the prices and the decline of cultivation every year, the farmers are increasingly disappointed about cardamom cultivation in the last few years.
