Peru's former president Alberto Fujimori, who was convicted of human rights violations and corruption, has died at the age of 86. His daughter Keiko Fujimori confirmed his death on Thursday.

Keiko said the former president passed away after a long battle with cancer. According to the BBC, Fujimori's doctor has confirmed that he died of tongue cancer .

Fujimori ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000. He was then forced out of power due to allegations of corruption.

During his tenure as president, he took a strong stand against the left-wing guerrilla insurgency . It was accused by some of human rights violation . But when the rebels seemed likely to seize power, Fujimori praises him for defeating them.

He fled the country before being convicted of corruption and human rights abuses. But he was arrested and extradited to Japan. Fujimori was convicted of corruption, abuse of power and involvement in two massacres in the 1990s.

He was released from Barbadillo prison in Lima last December after serving more than 15 years of imprisonment. Peru's Constitutional Court reinstated the presidential pardon issued six years ago.

After Keiko posted the news of her father's death on social media, a large number of Fujimori's supporters gathered outside her home, the BBC reported.

'After a long battle against cancer, our father Alberto Fujimori has just gone to meet the Lord,' his children Keiko, Hiro, Sachi and Kenji said in a joint statement. .

Dr. Jose Carlos Gutierrez of Fujimori said that the former president was diagnosed with tongue cancer earlier this year and died recently due to complications from the disease.

Fujimori's supporters say he saved Peru from the Sendero Luminoso (Signing Path), a brutal Maoist rebel group, and revitalized the country's economy after hyperinflation. However, for thousands of innocent victims of the conflict, he was a dictatorial and brutal leader.

He was elected president for the first time in Peru in 1990 when the armed rebellion was at its peak. At least 69,000 people died in Peru during the operations of his authoritarian government.

Fujimori's daughter Keiko is the leader of Peru's largest political party. Although she lost the last presidential election by a small margin, she has announced that she will run again in 2026 .
