Dalit and tribal organizations have announced a general strike on Wednesday in protest against the Supreme Court's order to implement the 'creamy layer' in the reservation given to scheduled backward classes and tribes in India.

The general strike has affected vehicles, railways, schools, colleges and markets in some states. The most impact has been seen in the states of Jharkhand and Bihar. Similarly, the impact of the strike has been good in Rajasthan too.

In some areas, the protestors have also engaged in vandalism. News agencies also reported violent clashes. The protestors have disrupted the train operation by sleeping on the railway tracks.

In Bihar, the route of some trains has been changed and some trains have been delayed in reaching their destinations. The movement of Dalit and tribal organizations has also been supported by the opposition political parties in some states. Rashtriya Janata Dal has supported the movement in Bihar.

Congress, Trimul Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samajwadi Party and other parties have also shown solidarity towards Andonal. The impact of the movement has also been seen in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The state governments have adopted high vigilance to maintain peace and order.

The Supreme Court has ordered to implement the 'creamy layer' in the reservation quota by a decision on August 1 . In India, there is a legal provision of 27 percent reservation for Scheduled Castes in various fields including government jobs and educational institutions. The Supreme Court has ordered to classify and separate the reservation quota within the said reservation . It is in the order of the court that the reservation given by the state governments can be determined on the basis of caste.

The court reversed the 20-year-old order and arranged quota even within the reservation. Earlier, reservation was determined by considering the entire Scheduled Castes as one group. The constitutional bench of 7 judges of the Supreme Court has ordered the determination of quota on the basis of caste within the prescribed reservation . The court explained that reservation based on caste is not contrary to the constitution. However, the state governments have said that before deciding the quota of any caste without taking a decision, detailed data should be prepared regarding its share.

The agitating organizations have been demanding to stop the classification within the scheduled castes, to keep the reservation of the scheduled castes in the schedule of the constitution, to arrange reservation in the private sector and the judiciary and to have a caste census in India.
