A day before the arrival of Washington's top diplomat, the foreign ministers of China and Russia met with their Southeast Asian counterparts on Friday, vowing to resist extra-regional powers.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Chinese Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov are participating in the three-day meeting of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held in Vientiane, the capital of Laos.

The foreign ministers of both countries held joint talks with the counterparts of the ASEAN member states . Wang also met with the new British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

In a meeting between Wang and Lavrov on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the two countries agreed to work together to counter "extra-regional powers that interfere in Southeast Asian affairs".

Lavrov said in a statement that they also discussed implementing a "new security structure" in Eurasia.

Quoting Wang, China's national news agency Xinhua wrote in the news, "Beijing is ready to cooperate with Russia". We are committed to firmly support each other and protect each other's core interests.'

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is expected to arrive in Vientiane on Saturday morning for talks with ASEAN foreign ministers.
