On this day (July 25) in 2007, Pratibha Patil became the President of India. She is the first woman President of India.

Born on December 19, 1934 in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, Patil completed her Masters in Political Science and Economics. After that, Patil, who studied law, was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Indian National Congress in 1962.

Patil was elected to the upper house Rajya Sabha in 1985. She was the Deputy Speaker of the Rajya Sabha from 1986 to 1988. In 1991, she was elected to the lower house Lok Sabha. In 2004, she became the governor of Rajasthan state.

Patil, who has long been close to the Gandhi family, was nominated for the presidency by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. She served as the 12th President of India from 25 July 2007 to 25 July 2012.
