Apples produced in Apihimal Rural Municipality have reached the local market. From the last week of August, apples produced by farmers have also started to be sold. Traders say that local apples have reached Khandeshwari, Makrigad in Apihimal. Farmers have said that this year there is a good harvest of apples in the Himalayan region. Farmers are happy as apple production is good this year in Apihimal-2, 3 and 4.
Apples are reaching the markets outside the municipality as there is access to transport up to Apihimal-5 Makrigad. Dipendra Bisht of Marma said that apples produced in Apihimal are being bought and sold in Latinath, Balach, Ganna, Gokuleswar etc. of the district. He said that local apples are being sold at 200 to 220 rupees per kilo.
Not only Apihimal Rural Municipality of Darchula, Apple grows in some places of Changaru, Bundi, Dumling, Duhun Rural Municipality, Naugad Rural Municipality and Marma Rural Municipality of Beas Rural Municipality. Lately, farmers have started cultivating apples commercially.
Apples grown in Apihimal and Marma are accessible to market and transportation. However, Jitsih Bohra, a farmer of Beas-1 Changru, says that the farmers of Beas, Duhu and Naugad Rural Municipality have always had to bear the brunt of the market.
After the implementation of the Prime Minister's Agriculture Modernization Project, farmers have started producing apples commercially. Kamal Tamang, Chief and Agricultural Officer of the Prime Minister's Agriculture Modernization Project Implementation Unit, Darchula, said that apples have been planted on an area of 200 hectares in the district.
He has started commercializing apples in five local levels in the district since 2076/77. Now some farmers have produced good apples. He said that farmers need training on apple production for better production. According to Tamang, there is still no situation to bring apples to the market. He said that it is better to pick apples here in the month of October.
Balkumari Bohra, chairman of apple zone management committee and apple farmer of Apihimal-4, says that this year, despite hail damage to apples, the yield is good. He has damaged the apples grown in the upper area of the Apihimal . Apples are good in the lower areas. Fearing wild animals, farmers have started picking apples ahead of time .
Agricultural technician Visheshwar Prasad Badu of Beas said that the sweetness of apples has decreased. He says that after the middle of October, the shape and taste of apple tipe seeds will be good. Apples are produced in about 50 hectares in Beas. According to Krishi Gyan Kendra Darchula, apples were cultivated on 170 hectares of land in the district last year.
According to Tamang, the agricultural officer of the Prime Minister's Agriculture Modernization Project, last year, 2,375 apple plants were distributed to farmers as subsidies. Based on the demand of the farmers, the apples of Italy, Gala Fuji Royal, Delicious, Golden Delicious varieties have been planted.
In the current financial year, farmers are prepared to be trained in apple production, how to apply Godmel, grading etc. to further commercialize the farmers.
