The newly constructed multi-purpose building of Prison Management Department Prison Office Kavre has been inaugurated. Jainarayan Acharya, Director General of Jail System Department inaugurated the newly constructed building during a program on Friday.

Addressing the ceremony, Director General Acharya said that he is confident that the office will make service delivery more efficient from the newly constructed building. He expected this office to be more convenient in internal office management.

Prison office Kavre has informed that a solar energy system has been installed in the office with the financial support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law of the Wagmati State Government and with the financial support of the Ministry of Water, Energy and Irrigation. It has technical support from Urban Development and Building Office and Water Resources and Irrigation Development Division Office . Jeevan Niraula, the head of the office, informed that the total cost of building construction was 24 lakh rupees and solar lights were installed at 15 lakh rupees.

Prisons over capacity

Jeevan Niraula, the head of Kavre Prison Office, said that the main problem is that there are more prisoners than the capacity in the prison. He opined that a certain number of prisoners should be transferred to a suitable place as soon as possible as the number of prisoners is increasing. He said that the construction of a building in a new location is the major need of the present time as the building where the prisoner/detainee is currently located is dangerous.

According to the government standards, the office has the capacity to hold 85 prisoners and 306 prisoners have been kept till the 4th of Sawan, informed Niraula, the head of the office . He said, 'Due to lack of space, we are forced to keep more prisoners than the capacity . We have brought this matter to the attention of the concerned agencies.'
