The bodies of two laborers who went missing after getting stuck in the descender cover slab of the 40 MW Bhotekoshi-1 hydropower project under construction in Bhotekoshi rural municipality-4 Hindi have been found after 13 hours.
According to Devendra Raj Joshi, Police Inspector of Bahrbise District Police, at 1:25 on Friday, the rescue operation started immediately after the incident, but they were found dead only at 4:00 in the morning. Ramjin Tharu and Suman Tharu of Bardiya Municipality died after being crushed by the project's descender cover slab. Joshi informed that their bodies have been sent to Dhulikhel Hospital in Kavre for post-mortem. It was difficult to get them out because they were trapped in the lower part of the slope structure.
According to the data of District Police Sindhupalchok, 11 people were injured in the accident. On Friday, workers were busy working above the Bhotekoshi-1 hydroelectric tunnel, whose construction started a year ago. Suddenly, when the slab started collapsing, the workers who were sitting down and working started screaming. In the stampede, 13 people were trapped between the slab and the upper part. District Police Deputy Superintendent Niranjan Bhattarai said that out of 13 people trapped, 11 people were rescued. He said that most of them were injured in the head, stomach and limbs.
In the beginning, only 7 people were injured, but later he confirmed that 11 people were injured.
'The condition of one of the injured is serious, some are being treated at Keystone and Baharbise Nagar Hospitals in Baharbise and some have been referred to Dhulikhel,' DSP Bhattarai said. According to him, most of the injured are from Dolakha. Ramchandra Rimal of Dolakha, Saila Thami, Gopal Thami, Padam Thami, Vijay Thami, Vishal Thami, Durga Tharu of Bardiya, Sashan Thapa of Rolpa, Shak Bahadur Shrestha of Elam. Health workers have said that the condition of Lahanu Tharu of Bardia is serious.
The Bhotekoshi 1 project got permission to use about 4.25 hectares of land in Bhotekoshi Gapa 1, 3, 4 and 5 wards, which is bordered by China. The project is going to be built by Electrico Power Company Limited at a cost of about 8 billion.
